The Good Life Er..Wife

The other day as my husband and I were leaving for work, I walked to our car and saw it surrounded by orange cones. In the distance were posters attached to the lamp posts. So I did what any nosy New Yorker would do. I discreetly glanced at it, in that I don’t really care, but I just want to know way. "The Good Wife" was taping on my street. Pretty cool I thought. Go Yonkers I thought. This had better be done by the time I get home I thought. As usual, around 6 ish I arrived to pick up my son from my parent’s place. My doting dad insisted on following me home in order to carry a large package that they were holding for me. So I wouldn’t have to struggle with the baby and the box and my stuff. Thanks Dad! Lo and behold my street is a mini-studio lot. Trailers and lighting and craft services oh my! I ask the guy whose sedan is blocking the street where I am supposed to park my car. He says "Sorry ma’m (Excuse you, I’m not even 30 yet!) but we have purchased all of these parking spots for the day. Umm..is that even possible. So annoyed and intrigued by the production set at my front door, literally. I give him the obligatory I friggin live here comment and glare, and found a spot 5 blocks away. Thanks to super dad, he parked near me and helped me out with my other bags as we descended onto "the set". I was very underwhelmed and super annoyed when I realized that we were ushered down the middle of the street, and questioned every 5 seconds about why we were walking through the set. For the millionth time, I freaking live here! So we got home, I looked out the window a couple of times and I was bored after 15 minutes then I started to miss my regular old boring street until production wrapped up at 3am! Boy, it must be nice to rent your own street. Now that is the good life.

Ahh the Holidaze

So sorry, its been a while. Ahh the holidaze. Being married means never having to mean I’m sorry, but sometimes having to say it. It means sometimes you have to cook dinner even when you don’t feel like it. It also means visiting the in-laws for the holidays.

In our case, my parents are 10 minutes away. His are 8 hours away. So of course I let him get first dibs on holidays. But deep inside I secretly wish we could stay in NY for all holidays. I mean I am a holidaynista! I love the holidays. My tree is already up and decorated. I’m almost done with my holiday shopping. This is just my thing!!

My Christmases have always been cinnamon scented and lightly dusted with Nat King Cole’s holiday songs in the background. It means the windows at Lord and Taylor and Hot Cocoa with mini marshmallows and Royal Dansk Danish butter cookies in the blue tin.

Our Thanksgiving is always dad carving the turkey, mom cooking for days, and everyone crying when we go around the table any saying what we are thankful for. To me, that is the only way to really do the holidays. Even Fourth of July, we ALWAYS barbecue. I’m thinking of giving up all 4th of Julys, and maybe 2 Mother’s Days in exchange for every Christmas in NY, in perpetuity.

I mean come on! Christmas in NY, vs Christmas in Baltimore. This really isn’t a fair fight. It’s New York after all. There is no place like it.

No Kiddes, No Stoppies!

Ok, I have a confession to make. This morning I was running a little late and I didn’t exactly stop when faced with my daily morning, yellow-orange, bane of my morning existence know as the School Bus. If for some reason if I leave the house at 7:40 instead of my usual 7:30 I am in a lose- lose situation. So this morning, I ran out of the house at 7:35, my 14 month old on my hip and started off down the street to the car. And bam, I realize the unthinkable has happened. My husband, my life partner, the man who promised to love and protect me forever, had moved the car without telling me.

As I sprinted to the car, in its new location in the total opposite direction, with my child squealing in delight at mommy’s marathon run to car. I check my phone and saw those numbers staring back at me.. 7:40. I strapped my sweetie in, and mentally prepared for the slow commute.

Part of me feels like School Bus drivers have some sort of sick joke they like to play on drivers. It’s almost like they all call each other to slow me down on purpose. All of a sudden without warning, the 10 minute trip to my parent’s place to drop off my son would soon be doubled to 20. But, as if a switch went off inside, I decided no kiddies, no stoppies!

So, when faced with the evil orange 8 wheeled monster on Riverdale Avenue, I looked for kids, saw none it sight and inched passed the retractable stop sign. Moms, judge me if you want but I pass at least 6 school buses in the morning! Anyway, as luck would have it that was the only school bus I passed this morning, and I was actually on time for work. So that being said, its not something I’ll do often, but if I’m pressed for time..No kiddies, no stoppies!

I'm sorry..it actually has a name?

So today is my first entry for this blog that I have been talking about for a while. Originally I am a Bronx girl, but I moved to Yonkers at 11, so I can say I grew up here. That being said, what is happening to Yonkers! Now granted, I live in "downtown" Yonkers. I use that term loosely because even though apartments range from $1500-$3500 in my less than one mile long neighborhood..I am a block from the YMCA. I am also less than a block from the homeless shelter. Thankfully, I was able to get a great deal on my great apartment when I moved in about 5 years ago. But now, its turning into a Chelsea. But Chelsea its not, as the ads say in Grand Central station. It's actually called SoYo. (smh)What was once a nice working class/middle class building is slowly going to small dogs and Maclaren strollers. My street, which originally only had 2 other apartment buildings has gone from no meters, to automated/debit card meters, to quarter meters for 20 minutes, to a quarter for 15 minutes of parking. I have probably spent at least$ 5,000 dollars in parking tickets, and been in at least 3 verbal altercations with the valet guys at the restaurant(that will remain nameless). I mean how dare you think you can hold spaces with orange cones on a public residential street! Progress is nice, this is something else entirely. So, I have decided to start this blog to vent, but also to cope with my love/hate relationship with my SoYo called life.
